Soros supports liberal PAC to woo Latinos

A recent story in the New York Times. says George Soros will be giving $5 million toward a $15 million campaign by Democrats this fall to sway Latino voters. Latinos often do support Democrats, but liberals believe they have an opportunity to get even more votes after Republicans have taken stands this year that seem against them.

This comes on the heels of Republican front runner Donald Trump calling Latino immigrants rapists and thieves. He also called for a wall between the United States and Mexico, and he said he would force Mexico to pay for it. He has also upset many with his call to ban Muslims. Other Republican candidates have also taken anti immigrant stances.

The campaign will focus on Florida, Colorado and Nevada, which all have large Latino populations. Democrats believe there are enough Latinos in those states to turn the tide in the November elections. Those states were won by Obama in the last two elections, but Republican governors were elected. The campaign hopes to sway undecided voters and to encourage those already in the liberal camp to get out and vote.

Republicans have a PAC of their own aimed at Latino voters. They will spend $10 million, financed by the Koch brothers.

George Soros often donates money, and uses his Open Society Foundation to support liberal causes around the world. He was involved in a move to unseat Bush in 2004, donating several million, but he was not too involved in the next two presidential election cycles. He has donated $13 million in the current election cycle.

Soros said he finds the rhetoric of Republicans offensive, and particularly that of Trump. He said their bombastic talk is a threat to the national interest and to democracy itself as an institution. He said that has moved him to get more involved. He believes there should be consequences to such hateful speech. He does not want to ban anyone, but he would like to see voters reject them and vote for Democrats instead.

Support for Democrats is not automatic though, for Democrats even though Republicans may have offended them. Latino organizers said in the past Democrats were stingy with donations, limiting what they could do. They were also upset that Obama was not able to do an immigration overhaul.

Soros is one of the world’s richest men. He made his fortune in the international finance and hedge fund businesses. He moved to the United States in the early 1950s and started building his empire. Soros studied at the London School of Economics in England. Soros grew up in Budapest, Hungary. His Jewish family had to hide from Nazi occupying forces, and they lived through World War II there.
